Saving
-
Saving often is good. Since you only have one position in Hardwar you
have to make sure not to save if you are in a bad situation (in the
middle of a bad looking fight for example). Doing so might force you
to replay from the beginning. Saving before missions, after surviving
a battle (and you know you're safe), before leaving a hangar with
valuable commodities or before doing other critical and potentially
dangerous tasks is highly recommended.
I also suggest that you occasionally make backups of your save
game. If you don't and save in bad position, you'll regret it. You can
make a backup by pressing ALT-TAB to leave the program and then copy
or move the file. This way you can, although it's a pain in if you do
it often, maintain an arbitrary number of saved games.
Targeting
-
The targeting during battle is one of Hardwar's weakness. If there are
many ships around, it's simply hard to find the one that is attacking
you, or to find the loot laying on the ground. There is unfortunately
no shortcut for this.
The navigator is however pretty useful. You can store up to 10
pilots and 20 locations. Lock interesting locations and pilots to make
sure they don't disappear. Do this with good trade routes, your
hangar(s) and other important places like Psycho Bob 1, and places
important to the plot (I don't mention them by name to avoid spoiling,
but you'll know what they are when you encounter them).
I usually use the pilot locking to remember which pilots are
pirates. That way I won't accidently target and attack friendly
people.
It's usually no point in locking trade posts or lightwells since
they appear in the local services list.
Messages
-
Checking your emails when you get new ones is recommended. You will
receive lots of useful information. Mission critical messages are
marked with two asterisks on either side of the message title. Hold on
to those until you know that they are safe to remove. You should also
hold on to the "Garbled Transmission". Towards the end of the game,
you will have the opportunity to get them decoded.
Enemies
-
Be careful who you upset! Early in the game you will want to avoid
attacking ships belonging to the factions. The first mission you will
get involves three Lazarus ships. The first idea to cross your mind
would be to blow them up and thus becoming a Lazarus enemy. It is
however very possibly to simply fly past the two attack moths.
If you kill an enemy of your enemy they will pardon you. This can
be hard however, since you can't get a list of the enemies after you
become one yourself. It's recommended that try to add an enemy pilot
to your targeting list before you attack ships belonging to that
faction.
If you attack civilians, you'll become an enemy to the police. If
you don't feel like killing a pirate to settle your score, you can
also pay off your crime for the humble price of $2000 for attacking
someone and $4000 for killing them. If you attack and kill more ships,
the payoff price will increase.
