Luxury Scavenging
-
One way to make a lot of money fast is to lure outside places which
sells expensive goods. General Industries is one very good place. If
someone enters there, they are very likely to leave with 10-30
narcotics. at $3000 each, that is $30000 to $90000. The cost for doing
this (killing an innocent trader) is $4000 at your local police
station. Considering the gains, it's well worth it.
If you decide to try to attack someone leaving General Industries,
make sure that you lure then away from the water. If you kill them
when they are above it, the valuable cargo will sink.
Minor plot spoiler following.
Later in the game, the fusion cell becomes available. After it's
available, every time you blow up a Skinner or Scrubber ship you will
get one. You can sell them for $12000 to $15000.
Quick'n'Profitable Trading
-
When you start a new game or later in the game if you need cash, go to
your favorite loan shark or bank. There is one in downtown and one in
Riverside. You can find their names by calling for a cab. Destinations
that are free are loan institutions.
When you have gotten the loan, go to General Industries. Buy drugs
(with the $25000 loan you can get a full small cargo pod) and ship
them to Slum. It's a short and easy (straight) ride, with little
pirates. You should make about $2500 per run. Later when you have a
larger pod (with 30 max), you will make 3 times as much per run. When
Slum runs out of money, ship the drugs to The Waterfront (also in
Riverside) instead. You can also make it a three or four point trip by
buying alcohol at Waterfront Booze and bring that to The Waterfront or
Slum.
Check the trading tips page and the trade route pages for more
trading information.
Get a Hangar
-
Rather early in the game, after making money with the above, buy
yourself a hangar. I personally recommend Downtown 05, which is
located right next to a lightwell downtown. Go to your new hangar and
open it to the public (Computer -> Owner Controls). Come
back every other day and collect the money you've made from
repairs. You should earn back the money it costed to buy the place in
a few days or so.
Since there are lots of fights near lightwells, those are the best
locations. If you find another place where there are lots of fights,
maybe that location will work as well. Buying a hangar in a lightly
trafficked area is useless from a money making point of view however.
Saving Money
-
One good way to save money is to fit and remove all equipment from
your moth in your hangar. If you for example upgrade an energy cell,
the shop will pay you a lowly $800 or so for your old one and charge
another $500-1000 to install the new one. If you do it yourself you
save the fitting cost and can sell the old one for maybe 3 times that
price.
Another good way to save a lot of money it to do any repairs on
your moth in your own hangar (see how that word keeps repeating
itself? :-). That will save you thousands of dollars throughout the
game.
Bounty Hunting
-
Bounty hunting is a good way of making money and having fun at the
same time. If probably won't make you loads of cash, but it's
challenging and fun. Check the combat section for more tips on bounty
hunting
Hunting Drug Lords
-
This tip was sent to me by Neil Fradkin. The idea is a combination of
bounty hunting and luxury scavenging:
Play as a scavenger or buy a salvage drone. Fill up your pilot
target list with wanted people from the police station. Once you leave
the station, look over the pilots in the list, and see which ones are
carrying narcotics or other expensive cargo. Follow a narcotic carrier
around for a while - it's highly probable that someone will come and
blow the bejesus out of him (either to collect the bounty or to get
the cargo). As soon as he does, grab that cargo and run to the nearest
bar or apartment building. If the guy is weakened, or better yet, if
he is recharging at a light tower, blast him yourself and take the
cargo. You'll make enough to buy a any moth you want in a short amount
of time.
