Fighting

Fighting is very hard in the beginning, especially when you aren't used to the flying and your moth. If you play as a trader, avoid fighting early on in the game, since you will have a hard time winning. The ordinary laser is the worst weapons you can use against shields, making killing anything very slow and tedious, not to mention dangerous.

The combination Plasma Kannon and Laser or Laser turret is what I have found to be most efficient. First eat down the shields with the Plasma and then the hull with the lasers. I rarely use missiles, since they usually don't help that much most of the time.

If you move too fast during fights, you will have a very hard time getting your target in sights. Slowing down will make this easier. Don't stop completely since doing so would make you a very easy target. Using sliding for combat movement is a method recommended by some.

Another method is to simply avoid enemy fire without fighting back. The attacking moth will eventually run out of energy. You can speed the process up with leech missiles (the only missiles I usually use). When it runs out of energy it will fly to the nearest lightwell, ignoring you completely. When it does that, it's an easy kill. This method is not recommended if you have more than one simultaneous attacker.

Many people seem to forget the importance of their radar in combat situations. You can easily see who's attacking since they have red lines between themselves and the center of the radar (you).

Using flares and chaffs will greatly improve your chances of survival. A couple of missile hits can quickly drain away your shields and structure. They are cheap, so use them a lot. It's better to waste some money than lose your life.

Using Lightwells to your advantage

This tip is mentioned shortly above, but it's good enough to gets its own section. Thanks to mikki5 for the idea.

If you are bounty hunting, but are having troubles killing your target (or simply want an easy kill), wait until your target runs out of energy. There are two ways to do this. The first way is to simply follow the moth around and wait for it to refuel. Be sure to have enough energy yourself. The second method is to shoot at your target sporadically (to keep him angry at you), avoiding all returning fire.

No matter the method you use - when it's almost of our energy it heads towards the nearest lightwell. When it does this it will ignore you completely during transit and recharging (until it's fully recharged). This makes it a very easy kill. If you wish, you can even recharge your own ship while killing the enemy.

This trick might be hard to pull off if their ship has a better energy cell than yours, but it's not impossible. Good luck.

Escaping Combat

Sometimes the heat of the battle is too much for you and your moth to handle. Escaping might be your only way out. The best way is usually to try to dock somewhere. This can be very dangerous though, since you will be a sitting duck while docking. This is especially true if you use the auto pilot.

Another recommended method of escape is entering a tunnel if there is one nearby. The reason for this is that the AI won't follow you quickly. Take a cab from one crater to another and you'll see what I mean.

The afterburner can also be used as an efficient way of escaping. Turn it on and either fly to a tunnel or to some place where you can dock in peace and not in pieces.

Bounty Hunting

This is the primary work of the aggressor. Anyone can do it of course, but until you get a Plasma Kannon it's not recommended. You can get a list of people that are wanted by going to any police station or from buildings which belong to the different factions.

I have found it better to look for enemies of the smaller factions, since those often are wanted by other factions as well. I have received about $8000 for killing a single moth. Use the targeting tips on the next page to keep track of soon-to-be dead pilots.

If you follow the combat tips above, you will most likely have a larger chance of survival. However the single most important thing is experience. After playing the game for countless hours, all enemies will seem easier than they used to be. Practice and remember that the easiest way to avoid dying in combat is to never fight!
