Moths

Upgrading your moth is essential to be able to get goodies like a turret (see below), faster engine, larger pods and more. The more expensive moths can also withstand more damage. However the cheaper and smaller moths have better handling, including higher turn rate and faster acceleration and de-acceleration. Therefor the largest moth might not be the best choice for fights.

Beware: If you upgrade you moth, all fitted equipment will be lost!
It is therefor highly recommended that you get your own hangar before you change ships. The reason for this is that you then can remove and fit weapons and other equipment from your ship for no cost.

In any case it's generally wiser to keep your old moth. This is especially true for your first moth for which you would only get $7500.

Software

Upgrading software is a very easy way to improve your moth performance. The first thing you should upgrade is Flight. That increases the top speed and handling of your moth, which helps a lot in fights. A complete list of software upgrades and what they do will eventually be added to the Upgrades page.

There is one software in particular that more experienced players should consider downgrading - the autopilot. Docking manually is often at least twice as fast and not very hard. If you are hunted by someone and need to escape quickly, those seconds might make the difference between life and death.

Software Shack 2 is the easiest place to locate. It's in the same complex as the Downtown Trade central.

Equipment

It's a very good thing to upgrade your ship when you can. The first thing a trader should buy is a Plasma Kannon. The laser, which is the only default weapon, is useless against shields. It's also important to get a cargo pod and a salvage drone early in the game, since those are needed on several occasions to make progress in the game.

The single best weapon is the laser turret. When you get a moth on which you can fit it, get it. It aims at your currently targeted enemy making it much easier to hit. It is not good against shields though, so a Plasma Kannon or missiles are needed as well.

Most equipment can be removed from your moth. Missiles, the afterburner, energy cells and engines can't be removed however. Therefor it's unwise to upgrade / install these unless you plan to use them or keep the moth for a longer period.

Later a complete list of all available equipment will be added to the upgrades page.
