On this page I will collect tips and tricks that will make your life
easier in Misplaced Optimism, whether your primary occupation is a are
a trader, aggressor or scavenger. If you have any own tricks feel free
to contact me and I might add them to this place.
Trading
-
If you don't know the basics about trading, the game is very hard and
becomes boring quickly. What often happens in the beginning is that
you get jumped by one or more ships as soon as you leave the
hangar. This is easily avoidable however.
The most important thing in the beginning of the game is to avoid
trading in Downtown. The reason is that the risk of getting attacked
there is higher than in other craters. There are always ships here
which can't wait to have a bite of your cargo. On the trade route page
you can find a list of routes which almost always are safe and which
also is profitable.
Commodities like Narcotics and Alcohol draws a lot of
attention. The more expensive your cargo is, the more interesting you
are to pirates and scavengers. Don't fly around with stuff like this,
especially not in Downtown, unless you really have to.
A badly equipped moth (like the one you have in the beginning) also
increases the chances of being a target. As you upgrade your moth with
cool weapons, many pirates think twice before attacking you.
Real Estate
-
Buying real estate can be a life and money saving investment, or even
profitable. The benefits of having your own hangar are free repairs,
free fitting and removing of equipment, unlimited storage space. You
can also use your hangar(s) to sell commodities or repairs. I haven't
yet sold anything at all in my hangars, but others have reported
success. I have however made plenty of money from repairs.
The best place to buy property if you want to make money is
downtown, preferable near a lightwell. There is always ship around
there and it is often fights in those areas. I once had $18000 waiting
one of my hangars after a couple of days. The property, which have
made lots of cash in two different games, is Downtown 05. You
won't be disappointed with that one.
Getting a property easy in the game is a very wise and
helpful. When you can afford it, get a hangar in each of the craters
where you usually hang out. That way, free repairs will always be near
in case you need it.
Loans
-
In the beginning, or even later in the game if you run out of money,
taking a loan will help you make money more quickly. If you place as a
trader, I recommend taking a large loan ($25.000) right in the
beginning of the game. Then do the General Industries -> Slum drug
route. You will quickly have made a lot of money. By the time you have
to pay back the loan, you should easily have made $100.000.
You can locate other places by leaving your moth and call a
cab. Scroll through the list of places. If the cost to the destination
is $0 you've found one. Please note that the ride back isn't free. One loan
place is MisOp Finance in Downtown. There is another one in Riverside.
Make sure that you can pay back the loan when it's due!
