The difference between the three professions - Aggressor Scavenger and Trader - is the initial equipment of your moth. You will also get slightly different job offers (like selling scrap metal, bounty hunting and trading). Here is a list of them and some tips on how to get started.

Aggressor - The Bounty Hunter

If you chose to be an aggressor your ship will come with the Plasma Kannon equipped from start. You won't have a cargo pod however. For the unexperienced or even the experienced Hardwar player, this is without a doubt the hardest profession. To get started, go to the local police station or faction facilities and check the wanted / enemy lists (avoid attacking faction ships, unless you want them to randomly attack you). The combat page has more tips on bounty hunting.

Scavenger - The Collector

Your primary job is to collect scraps from blown up moths and the cargo they were carrying. This might sound easy, but is usually isn't, due to fierce competition. Your ship comes equipped with a cargo pod, a salvage drone and a level three radar to allow you to see dropped cargo and scrap metal.

This is my favorite profession since you can do both trading and scavenging from the beginning. If you can't find anything to scavenge, just pretend you're a trader following the tips below.

You can also create your own loot, of course. If you find a ship leaving General Industries it will most likely be carrying drugs. Kill it and get the drugs, and you could make $50000-$80000 with very little effort. You will be wanted by the Police, but just pay them $4000 (dock with any police station) and your record be cleared. Make sure not to kill anyone above water, or their cargo will sink.

Trader - The Merchant

This profession is similar to the scavenger. The main difference is that your ship comes with an autopilot and some missiles instead of the salvage drone. The only tips I can give the early trader is to take out a large loan and run the profitable routes described on the trade route page. If you do that, you'll soon have made lots of money.

The scavenger and the trader should both avoid battle until they have gotten the Plasma Kannon. Use missiles if you are in trouble.
